So I'm writing this, in the darkness of the hallway at the top of my stairs. This seems to be the best location to catch my daughter in the act of climbing out of her new "big girl" bed to share some important revelation with my wife and me. The other night, it was to share the fact that she had Winnie the Pooh on her pajamas. Then, it was to show us that she had both her stuffed dogs with her, one under each arm. Just a moment ago, it was to let me know that she had just finished the glass of juice she has asked for, thank you very much.

So when I put her back in bed and tucked her in again, I decided to try a lullaby instead of the stern "back to bed -- now!" which has been the mantra of the past few nights. So as she looked up at me, I began with "Hush little baby, don't say a word. Daddy's going to buy you a mockingbird..." That seemed to go well, so I continued. "And if that mockingbird don't sing, Daddy's going to buy you a diamond ring..."

(ahh, it's never to early to establish materialistic values, huh?)

"...and if that diamond ring don't..."

(uh...what do diamond rings do, or, in this case, not do? Don't fit? Don't cost three month's salary? I took a stab...)

"...shine, Daddy's going to buy you..."

(a bottle of wine? Not a good idea... A conga line? Not conducive to sleeping... Palestine? Too policitally charged...)

"...uh...something divine."

Perhaps sensing my lyrical clumsiness, and perhaps because she felt a little sorry for me, my daughter actually rolled over and closed her eyes, as if to say "thanks, Da... I know, it's the thought that counts. I love you anyway."

At least, that's how I interpretted it.
