Long term set-up
So one of the great things about playing an ongoing campaign, especially an Adventure Path like the Shackled City, is the opportunity for setting up a situation way in advance. For instance, while it's cool that the characters are trying to rescue a friend from an assassin's blade, it's even cooler if they have an established relationship -- perhaps even a romantic connection -- with the victim in question. Suddenly, the emotions become much more real, and we get to enjoy the personality of the affected characters more than if it were simply a boxed-text encounter.
