crackberry
So I just became that guy. You know, the guy who can't sit in a meeting, walk down the street, drive his car, eat lunch, watch tv, or have anything like a conversation without checking his Blackberry.
I'm not proud, but man, this thing is cool. :)

April 16, 2008Random Lessons
I learned a few things today...
If you wear a graphic tee with Chinese characters on it into a Chinese restaurant, you should expect to be asked what it says. If you don't read Chinese, expect to be politely teased in a language you don't understand.
Bricks come in all sizes, and consequentially may look farther away than they truly are in a rear view mirror.
Don't file your taxes without checking completely through your work bag.
Being naked puts everyone in a better mood.
A platypus should really be able to handle any situation it finds itself in. (thanks, Emerson)

February 21, 2008Marathon
You can do a lot in a lifetime
If you don't burn out too fast
You can make the most of the distance
First you need endurance
First you've got to last...
OK, flashback to high school. New yearbooks just came out, and everyone is passing them around for signatures for future proof that they had friends. And, in an effort to look and to create a legacy of being cool, I started signing my friend's books with profound lyrics from such rock greats as Rush and Led Zeppelin. Childish and stupid, I know... but then again, so is high school.
Anyway, I picked that quote because that's what the past 3 (4?) months have felt like. Things are going very well in all aspects... but like the pink bunny, they just keep going... and going. One thing after another, no rest for the wicked, blah blah blah. I'm not complaining, mind you; it's good to be busy. But it seems like by the time that all of the energy is spent on work or other commitments, there is little left for myself or those I love. The rewards have been wonderful, though, and I can't help but think that if I can just keep up the pace a little longer, there will be time to rest and recuperate soon.
More than just blind ambition
More than just simple greed
More than just a finish line
Must feed this burning need
In the long run...

September 20, 2007The Trek Life
I stumbled across a new web-comic today, The Trek Life. It's a nice tribute to Star Trek fandom that pokes fun without being mean, all along acknowledging the insanity of extreme geekdom without condemning it. Perhaps I'm talking it up too much, but I enjoyed it, so check it out.

September 17, 2007The Wheel of Time turns...
I've often made the probably rather crass joke that I won't start a multi-book series of novels until they are all published, for fear that the writer will die before completing the epic and leave it unfinished.
Today, Robert Jordan, author of the brilliant though incredibly epic Wheel of Time series, passed away, leaving the last book in the twelve (or thirteen) book series unfinished.
Robert Jordan has many fans, and I am one of them. I promise I will finish reading his opus series (I'm only up to book six or so...), one day, even if it remains tragically unfinished. Though I doubt that will be allowed to happen.
The Wheel of Time was an inspiration for several aspects of our equally long-winded and oft-times rambling D&D campaign, the Wyrmfang Chronicles, including the central McGuffin that drives the loosely connected plots. I have borrowed many names and character concepts to populate our Tuesday-only world, especially back when it started, so I owe a debt of thanks.
Thanks, Robert. You'll be missed, but never forgotten.
